When most people think of visiting a chiropractor, they think of getting the spine and neck back into alignment to reduce inflammation and improve function.

What you might not think of is the power of gentle human touch. A chiropractor is one of the only physicians where we work almost entirely with our hands. Not a single patient, even those that I use instruments to help adjust, leave my office without me using my hands to gently assess their situation and provide treatment.

When I use my hands to diagnose, I’m able to ascertain things about my patients that even the best instruments can’t tell me. And when I use my hands during an adjustment, I’m able to provide comfort and a gentleness to the adjustment that my patients need.

Some of my patients come in for weekly adjustments because of the level of stress they are under, especially in recent weeks and months. The adjustments remove the inflammation but each one tells me that the gentle human touch also helps them feel better physically, emotionally, and mentally.

During these times of “social distancing” many people are touch starved. I’m sure many of you have realized just how much you rely on the human touch now that it’s decreased! Gentle, appropriate human touch affects a person’s heart rate and blood pressure and influences their ability to sleep.

When a person’s body is not functioning well, especially when sleep is disturbed, their mood is also affected. Depression and anxiety increase and that affects relationships.

Regular chiropractic treatment is good for the body and mind even in good times. But during a time of stress, increasing your adjustments will reduce inflammation and the human touch will help calm your mind and senses.
