Have you heard of the DUTCH testing system? As a chiropractor, I am always looking for new ways to serve my patients and help them find ways to have healthier and happier lives. I recently started promoting this testing through my office and wanted to share a little bit more about it.
You might be asking, what does DUTCH even mean? It stands for Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones and it checks for sex hormones, adrenal hormones, nutritional organic acids, and neurotransmitter metabolites. Some parts of the test are from urine, other parts are from saliva and all the instructions for each part will be provided with the test.
The results of this testing can help find the root causes of infertility, fatigue, hormone imbalance, irregular menstrual cycles, and many other symptoms. Let’s look at each type of hormone it can measure individually:
Sex hormones are estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Not only does it look at these hormones but it looks at what makes them and how they are being processed in the body. Particularly, it shows how estrogen is being filtered out in the liver. This can give some valuable information about your health. Taking an in-depth look at your sex hormones can give so much insight into many different symptoms or conditions such as painful periods, PCOS, infertility, irregular periods, irritability, and even male-pattern hair growth or hair loss.
Your adrenal glands are located on top of your kidneys and their hormones are DHEA and cortisol. DHEA is responsible for helping make estrogen and testosterone. Cortisol is important for waking you up in the morning. Cortisol spikes within the first hour of waking to get our bodies up and moving. If cortisol is not functioning properly, this can lead to chronic fatigue if its too low or weight gain if it is too high.
The DUTCH test also looks for nutritional organic acids and neurotransmitter metabolites. This means it can look for things like vitamin B6 or B12 deficiency. It also checks for melatonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine metabolites. These are all extremely important neurotransmitters so it's good to know if they are working properly.
The DUTCH test provides a more comprehensive story than saliva, 24-hour urine, or blood alone. I love how the DUTCH test is so thorough and looks at how all the different hormones are made and broken down in the body. This complete look helps us dig deeper into what is truly causing your symptoms. Once we have a better understanding of your symptoms, we can address them more effectively!
